A January to remember: The FI corporate bond market

February 11, 2022 - 2 minutes
Group of colleagues in discussion as they walk down a corporate hallway.
Amidst an uncertain global macro-economic and geo-political backdrop heading into 2022, many financial institutions (FIs) were keen to take advantage of historically attractive funding conditions supported by a resilient credit backdrop. As such, January 2022 witnessed a near-record month of financial issuance with ~US$110B of supply in the USD investment grade corporate bond market alone.

Navigating a complex landscape

Record primary market activity demonstrates the importance of prudent and strategic advisory as FIs react to challenging global markets by pursuing more defensive funding solutions. As economies recover from the global pandemic, clients must navigate a combination of rising rates, higher inflation, tapering government stimulus, continued supply chain disruption and expected central bank balance sheet runoff.

To best address challenging markets, FIs look to TD Securities' global capabilities for trusted advice and strategic solutions. In January alone, we actively led 14 investment-grade bond offerings for global FI clients (across North America, Europe and Asia) spanning a range of currencies (including USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and CAD) and products (from covered bonds to capital).
